Are better and multiply more.

Imam Ibnu Rajab رحمه الله said

As for the voluntary (Nawaafil) acts of worship in the ten days of Dhul Hijjah, they are better than the voluntary acts in the ten days of Ramadan. Likewise, the obligatory acts in the ten days of Dhul Hijjah are multiplied more than the multiplication of obligatory acts at other times.

The roots of all sins

Ibnu Al-Qayyim رحمه الله said

The roots of all sins are three: Arrogance, which turned Iblis into what he became; Greed, which expelled Aadam from Paradise; and Envy (Hasad), which emboldened one of Aadam's two sons against his brother. So whoever is protected from the evil of these three has been protected from evil. Disbelief stems from arrogance, disobedience from greed, and oppression and injustice from envy.

Introduction and Definition of Eid

All praise is due to Allaah, and may the peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allaah, upon his companions and those who follow him.

To proceed:

This is a concise research on the rulings of Eid, which I have extracted from the books of the scholars. I ask Allaah to make it beneficial.

Eid Definition

linguistically:

Refers to every day that involves a gathering. Its derivation is from the verb "aada ya'oud عاد يعود" (to return), as if people return to it. It is also said that its derivation is from "Al-aadah" (habit/custom), because people made it a custom. The plural is A'yaad.

Technically:

It is a name for what returns of a general gathering in a customary, recurring manner: either with the return of the year, or the return of the month, or the return of the week. Eid is a religious manifestation.

Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, said:

{ لِّكُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ جَعَلۡنَا مَنسَكًا هُمۡ نَاسِكُوهُۖ } [Surah Al-Ḥajj: 67]

For every nation We have ordained religious ceremonies [e.g. slaughtering of the cattle during the three days of stay at Mîna (Makkah) during the Hajj (pilgrimage)] which they must follow;

Thus, for this reason, we find all Muslims – despite the differences in their countries, colors, and languages – rejoice greatly at the arrival of Eid. They know that the legislated Eid is not a product of today, but rather it has many centuries past. Yet, despite this, they are not afflicted with lassitude nor boredom. Rather, they offer the best of what they possess in terms of clothing, food, and drink, and they do not expect any reward or gratitude from anyone. It is merely a joy that Allaah has placed in their hearts.

Ahmad transmitted in his Musnad with an authentic chain from the Hadith of Anas Ibnu Malik, رضي الله عنه , who said:

"The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم came to Madinah, and they had two days in which they would play during the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah). So he said: 'Indeed, Allaah, the Blessed and Exalted, has substituted for you something better than them: the Day of Fitr and the Day of Sacrifice (Nahr).'"

So, a Muslim should emulate the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ) in his travels and being residence, his joys and sorrows.

Our Lord, blessed and exalted, commanded us to do so saying:

{ لَّقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِی رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةࣱ لِّمَن كَانَ یَرۡجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡیَوۡمَ ٱلۡـَٔاخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا } [Surah Al-Aḥzāb: 21]

Indeed in the Messenger of Allâh (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the Meeting with) Allâh and the Last Day, and remembers Allâh much.

From Among the deeds of this day:

Firstly, Ghusl:

It is recommended to do Ghusl (bath) on this day.

Due to the Mursal narration of Sa'eed Ibnu Al-Musayyib who said: "The Sunnah of Fitr is three: walking to the salah ground (Musalla), eating before going out, and taking a bath." Al-Firyaabi transmitted it with a Hasan (good) chain.

Along with the narration from Ibnu Umar in Al-Muwatta' with a Jayyid (good) chain: "He (Ibn Umar) used to take a bath on the day of Fitr before going out to the Musalla."

Secondly, Takbeer:

For Eid Al-Fitri:
Saying Takbeer (exclaiming "Allaahu Akbar") begins after the sunset on the last day of Ramadan, based on His (Allaah's) saying, the Most High:

{ وَلِتُكۡمِلُوا۟ ٱلۡعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَىٰكُمۡ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ } [Surah Al-Baqarah: 185]

(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allâh [i.e. to say Takbîr (Allâhu Akbar; Allâh is the Most Great] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.

And it ends with the Imaam's Takbeer for the Eid prayer; this is for Eid Al-Fitr.

As for Eid Al-Ad-ha:
Takbeer begins from the dawn of the Day of Arafah until the sunset on the last day of Ayyam al-Tashreeq, based on the Hadith of Uqbah Ibnu Amir, in the Musnad of Ahmad and Sunan Abi Dawud – and it is authentically raised (to the Prophet):

"The Day of Arafah, the Day of Nahr (Sacrifice), and the days of Tashreeq are our Eid, the people of Islam, and they are days of eating and drinking."

And it is authentically narrated in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah from Ali

"That he used to say Takbeer after the Fajr prayer on the Day of Arafah until the Asr prayer of the last days of Tashreeq, and he would say Takbeer after Asr."

It is recommended to raise one's voice with Takbeer, without disagreement, and this was stated by An-Nawawi in Al-Majmoo' (5/45).

As for the wording of the Takbeer; nothing authentic has been reported from the Prophet. However, it is authentically narrated in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah from Ibnu Mas'ud that he used to say:

"الله أكبر، الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله، والله أكبر، الله أكبر، ولله الحمد"

Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, La ilaaha illa Llaah , Wallaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Walillahil Hamd -

Allaah is Greater than all else, Allaah is Greater than all else, there is no diety worthy of true worship except Allaah, Allaah is Greater than all else, Allaah is Greater than all else, and all praise is due to Allaah.

And it is authentically narrated in Musannaf Ibnu Abi Shaybah from Ibnu Abbas that he used to say:

"الله أكبر كبيرا، الله أكبر كبيراً، الله أكبر وأجلْ، الله أكبر ولله الحمد"

Allaahu Akbar Kabira, Allaahu Akbar Kabira, Allaahu Akbar wa Ajall, Allahu Akbar Walillahil Hamd -

Allaah is Greater than all else, absolutely, Allaah is Greater than all else, absolutely, Allaah is Greater than all else, absolutely, and Most Glorious. Allaah is Greater than all else and all praise is due to Allaah.

Thirdly, Wearing Beautiful clothes:

One should adorn oneself by wearing the best clothes one possesses; due to the Hadith of Abdullaah Ibnu Umar:

"Umar took a silk brocade cloak that was being sold in the market. He took it and brought it to the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) and said: 'O Messenger of Allaah, buy this, adorn yourself with it for Eid and for delegations.' The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) said to him: 'This is not except the garment of one who has no share (in the hereafter).'" Agreed upon.

Fourthly, Eating or not Eating:

Eid Al-Fitri
It is appropriate for Eid Al-Fitr to eat dates before going out to the Musalla; based on the Hadith of Anas رضي الله عنه in Bukhari who said:

"The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم would not proceed on the Day of Fitr until he had eaten some dates."

" كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَا يَعْدُو يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ حَتَّى يَأْكُلَ تَمَرَاتٍ "

Eid Al-Ad-ha
As for Eid Al-Ad-ha, his guidance was that he would not eat until he returned from the Musalla. In Musnad Ahmad, from the Hadith of Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

"The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم , when it was the Day of Fitr, would not go out until he had eaten, and when it was the Day of Nahr (Sacrifice), he would not eat until he had slaughtered." And the Hadith is Hasan (good) due to its supporting narrations.

" كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْفِطْرِ لَمْ يَخْرُجْ حَتَّى يَأْكُلَ ، وَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ لَم يَأْكُلْ حَتَّى يَذْبَحَ " والحديث حسن بشواهده .

Fifthly, Exiting to the salah ground:

Going out to the Musalla (open salah ground), and salah is not performed in the mosque except for a valid excuse. In the Sahihayn, from the Hadith of Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri رضي الله عنه who said: "The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم used to go out on the Day of Fitr and Eid Al-Ad-ha to the Musalla."

" كَانَ رَسُولُاللَّهِ ﷺ يَخْرُجُ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ وَالْأَضْحَى إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى " .

Note: If one is in Makkah, then doing salah in Al-Masjid Al-Haram (the Sacred Mosque) is better, without disagreement, as stated by An-Nawawi in Al-Majmoo' (5/524).

Sixthly: Differing in the paths of exit and returning

It is recommended that if one goes to Eid prayer by one path, they return by another path; due the Hadith of Jabir ibn Abdullah who said:

"The Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ), when it was the Day of Eid, would take a different path." Bukhari Transmitted it.

" كَانَ النَّبِيُّ إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ عِيدٍ خَالَفَ الطَّرِيقَ " أخرجه البخاري .

Seventhly, No Naflah before nor after:

There is no naflah salah before or after the Eid prayer; due to the Hadith of Ibnu Abbas in Bukhari:

"Indeed, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed two rak'ahs on the Day of Fitr and did not pray anything before or after them."

" أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَمْ يُصَلِّ قَبْلَهَا وَلا بَعْدَهَا " أخرجه البخاري.

Exclaiming Takbeer

It is recommended to say Takbeer (proclaiming "Allaahu Akbar"); due to His saying, the The Exalted:

{وَلِتُكْمِلُواْ الْعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا اللهَ عَلَى مَا هَدَاكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ}

{"and that you may complete the number [of days] and that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful."} (Al-Baqarah 2:185)

and His saying, the Most High:

{وَاذْكُرُوا اللهَ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَّعْدُودَاتٍ ۚ }

{"And remember Allah during [specific] numbered days."} (Al-Baqarah 2:203),

and His saying, the Exalted:

{لِّيَشْهَدُوا مَنَافِعَ لَهُمْ وَيَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللهِ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَّعْلُومَاتٍ} .

{"That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days."} (Al-Hajj 22:28).

And due to the hadith of Ummu Atiyyah Nusaybah Al-Ansariyyah, رضي الله عنها, in the two Sahihayn, who said: "The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم commanded us to bring out on the two Eids the unmarried women and those secluded in their chambers, and he commanded the menstruating women to keep away from the place salah of the Muslims."

In another wording: "We were commanded to go out on the day of Eid, even bringing out the virgin from her seclusion, even the menstruating women, so they would say Takbeer with them and supplicate with their supplications; hoping for the blessing and purification of that day."

Two divisions of the Takbeer

Takbeer is divided into two types:

Absolute (Mutlaq): This is not restricted by a specific time, so it is recommended to be recited always.

Restricted (Muqayyad): This is restricted to specific times, usually after the prescribed salawaat.

It's duration

The Takbir for Eid al-Fitr begins, according to the preponderant opinion of the scholars (which is the view of the majority of scholars among the Companions, Tabi'in, and those after them), from the morning (Ghadu) until the Eid prayer. It ends when the Imam pronounces the Takbeer for the prayer.

As for Eid al-Adha: Absolute Takbir is recommended throughout the ten days of Dhul Hijjah (due to the recommendation to increase good deeds during this period, including Takbir), and all the days of Tashreeq. It begins from the start of the month of Dhul Hijjah until the last day of the days of Tashreeq.

As for the Restricted Takbir, for those who are not performing Hajj, it begins from the Fajr of the Day of Arafah until the sunset of the last of the days of Tashreeq.

For the pilgrim, the Restricted Takbir begins for him from the Dhuhr of the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm Al-Nahr) until the sunset of the last of the days of Tashreeq. And Allaah knows best.

Bid'ah Takbeer

Congregational Takbir in the two Eids and other occasions is an innovation (Bid'ah), and this is the fatwa of the great scholar Ibnu Baaz, may Allah have mercy on him.

Among the forms of Takbeer are:
